This is what I would describe as a collection of Rock Ballads. At this stage, the Horslips have left behind most of their folk/trad influence (some of it remains, however). Having said that, I still like the album. They seem to have been experimenting with some new musical forms with some very heavily layered pieces. There is much more use of keyboards than in their previous rock albums. Short Stories, Tall Tales is not a concept album like The Táin, Celtic Symphony, Aliens, or The Man Who Built America.
